Cadaqués is the easternmost village of continental Spain situated in the county of Alt Empordà in the province of Girona in Catalonia, on the Costa Brava. It was isolated by mountains and in the past many pirate gangs took refuge after attacking ships on the high seas. In the early twentieth century tourists have started moving in more accessible areas and other areas remained farther from urban development which is highly appreciated nowadays. The village of medieval origin and encircled by a great wall occupied the space of what is now called the historic center with narrow streets that seem mazes. There is the church of Santa María (XVI-XVII century) with its very original baroque altar and pillars supported by four giants and has a very important organ, considered one of the oldest organs in Catalonia. The village is also known for having lots of coves whose best known is Portlligat. Everyone knows that Salvador Dalí loved this village and there was his inspiration.
Tips
To have a magnificent view and take good pictures, visit the Santa María church. You can also attend the mass on Sundays at 10:00.
If you love the sea, you have some beaches and there are many coves with pebbles and rocks, so it would be suitable to bring sports shoes to enter into the water.
There is a tourist train offering tours throughout the village and in the most famous coves.
