Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel is a Mexican island located in the Caribbean Sea about twenty kilometers from the mainland (Playa del Carmen) and about 60 km from Cancun. It is accessible by ferry. The island is 48 km (from north to south) by 16 km (from east to west) and most of it is uninhabited and covered with dense vegetation. Most of its inhabitants are in the city of San Miguel de Cozumel. It was Jacques Cousteau who made the place known especially through his films of the 60s that showed the important coral reef. With its crystal clear waters, the island is well known for scuba diving and many cruise ships make a stopover for it. There are several Mayan ruins being those of San Gervasio the most important. The beaches are not so famous because most are wild. The place has a nice temperature all year round and the waters are nice too all the time.

Tips

If you do not practice scuba diving, you can enjoy an excursion with the Atlantis submarine; it’s a little expensive but it’s worth it.

If you like museums, visit the downtown one, to learn about the history and culture of the place.

You can also visit the Faro Celerain ecological reserve of Punta Sur where you will find guides that will show you the mangroves, the lagoons, the reefs and the coastal dunes. This is a good opportunity to observe wildlife too. There is the possibility to climb to the top of the lighthouse.
