Arenal Volcano, Alajuela, Costa Rica

Arenal is a young volcano in Costa Rica; its first eruption occurred there are 7,000 years. with a nearly symmetrical conical shape. It has been erupting since 1968 until 2010. It is located in the Northwest of the country, in the West of the province of Alajuela, 90 km northwest of the capital San José. It is surrounded by the central mountain range, but it is part of the Cordillera de Tilarán, close to the Chato volcano and the artificial Arenal Lake. La Fortuna and La Palma are the closest towns. It has an altitude of 1720 m. It has 5 craters.

Tips

There are several hotels in the area and the volcano is easily visible from these locations weather permitting because very often the volcano is under the clouds.
You have hot water baths in the region open even in the evening, they also offer restaurant service but you are not forced to eat there.
You also have ideal suspension bridges to visit in a day hike. If you think to go away and penetrate into the nature, you can do it with a guide because there are places which could be dangerous if you don’t know the area well and they would ask a very good physical condition.
