Schoelcher Library, Fort-de-France, Martinique

The Schoelcher Library, located in Fort-de-France in Martinique, is a public library. It is located at the corner of Liberté St. and Victor Sévère St., facing the north corner of Savane Square. Victor Schoelcher, deputy of Guadeloupe and Martinique (1848-1850) had a collection of 10,000 books and 250 musical scores but since he had no descendants, he left his collection to the General Council of Martinique under condition of create a public library. The building was built by Pierre Henri Picq. The building was built in the garden of the Tuileries in Paris and was first presented to the Parisians (1886-1887), before being dismantled and shipped by boat to Fort-de-France to be rebuilt. Unfortunately, most of the original books disappeared with a large fire in 1890. The library finally opened in 1893. The building, built on a square plan, has a large dome that illuminates the reading room. There is a mix of art nouveau, western classical and Egyptian art and some Byzantine influences. Names of great French writers decorate friezes. There is a very colorful mosaic exterior pediment.

If you visit Fort-de-France, it’s worth some time to see the library and its building.

Cayo Guillermo, Ciego de Avila, Cuba

Cayo Guillermo is a small island of 13 square kilometers, part of the archipelago Jardines del Rey (King’s Gardens) and which is part of the archipelago Sabana-Camaguey. This archipelago has more than 2500 islands and islets (cayos) and is located off the Atlantic coast of Cuba in the province of Ciego de Avila. This popular destination is known for its five kilometers of fine white sand beaches, its always calm sea, its shallow seashore and its clear waters of a beautiful turquoise blue. It is an oasis of peace for lovers of nature and the beach. Playa Pilar is one of the most beautiful beaches there. The archipelago Jardines del Rey has its own international airport which is located on Cayo Coco, the neighboring island of Cayo Guillermo. The two islands are connected by a bridge. The archipelago is also connected to the big island of Cuba by a dike in the sea of 27 kilometers long. Bus transfer from Jardines del Rey Airport to Cayo Guillermo hotels is approximately 45 minutes.

Tips

Some hotels offer a service of sharing, you must go to the reception of your hotel and ask for the bracelet of the hotel you want to visit but you can visit a hotel per day only, from 9 am to 5 pm, excluding restaurants à la carte and transportation between hotels.

Playa del Carmen, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Playa del Carmen is a village and beach of Mexico on the Caribbean Sea in the Yucatan Peninsula and makes part of a  tourist complex known as Riviera Maya. The island of Cozumel is opposite the village. The 5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida) and the pier for Cozumel is the tourist and commercial section, pedestrian area,  with many bars, discos, restaurants and shops close to the beach.

If you like sports, you are in the right place: diving, windsurfing, sailing, everything is possible.
Playa del Carmen is a perfect place to relax and enjoy,  to make excursions to other towns as Cancun (80 km), Tulum (ruins), Chichen Itza (Maya City), Xel Ha or Xcaret Eco Park (aquatic and cultural parks).
If you like coral reefs, go to Akumal, Puerto Morelos or Cozumel to enjoy the underwater world.
There aren’t many cultural activities but there are cinemas where you can watch movies in English spetially on rainy days.
If you like shopping, there‘s also a shopping mall  at Plaza Las Americas.
