Festival of flowers, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

One of the biggest attractions of Funchal, both for tourists and residents themselves in the spring, is the festival of flowers, because flowers are at their best. Floats parade through downtown streets and perfuming the people attending to the event. It also has different troops participating in the parade to present their proposals accompanied by dances and they compose a new choreography each year. The beauty of flowers, the colorful costumes and the joy that the event represents, is a good reason to attend, it is an exuberant celebration and it’s good to know. Throughout the College is the so-called “Wall of Hope”, it is a wall where children place their flowers to build a giant wall of flowers that symbolizes the hope for a better world. You will find the streets with beautiful carpets made with flowers and the best decoration receives a prize. The party also has traditional music groups and classical music. Other performances take place and there’s a different exposure of flowers every year.

Tips

If you decide to visit Madeira at this time, you can take advantage of the offers that some hotels do when the party takes place and rent a car or motorbike to visit other places on the island.

During these days of the event, the streets are very colorful and beautiful to take pictures of the city.

Grand Park Royal Cancun Caribe is a resort of 311 luxury rooms and 33 villas. The site is not very big like other complexes and that’s exactly what makes it charming. There are 4 restaurants, a wellness center, spa, two swimming-pools and a beautiful view of the sea and the beach which is very beautiful. They have an all inclusive package with unlimited meals and drinks, room service available 24 /24 hours, a mini bar in the room, snacks and drinks for children, wi-fi throughout the site and several activities for the whole family. The rooms are quite spacious and the villas have a private pool. There is entertainment in the evening in the restaurants but in general the site is quiet enough and not noisy to relax on vacation.

Tips

If you wish, there is a service to buy tours in the area, available on site even as the possibility of renting a car.

If you want to dance, there is no disco in the hotel but you can walk for ten minutes and you will find some.

There is a little seashell on entering the sea so plan for water shoes.

Mytilene, Lesbos, Greece

Mytilene is the main city and port of Lesbos, the Greek island in the Aegean often called Mytilene the name of its capital. It is located on the southern tip of the island, near the Turkish coast. Aristotle lived and taught there. The island changed hands several times throughout the years, but since 1916, the city and the island joined the independent kingdom of Greece. In 1941, the island was occupied by a German infantry division. There are many neoclassical buildings such as the prefecture of Lesbos, the former City Hall, the Experimental High School, hotels and homes. The port is dominated by the Baroque church of Saint Therapon. The port for ferries communicate with the most important cities and the neighboring islands. To see: the old theater, archaeological museums, the castle, the church of St. Simeon Monastery of Saint Raphael, the Statue of Liberty, among others.

Tips

The city is ideal for a relaxing vacation and enjoy visiting other places with the ferries. You can go to Piraeus, Thessaloniki, the islands of Chios and Ayvalık and sometimes you can also visit Dikili in Turkey. Enjoy to buy one of the most known products the Ouzo (Greek anise-based liquor made of neutral alcohol mixed with various spices and then distilled and diluted). You will find a couple of producers on the island and shops where you might even enjoy it. You can also enjoy sardines and olives of the region.
